Calico Early Man Site

Come to The Calico Mountains Archaeological Site (Calico Early Man Site) – Learn a little science, have a lot of fun!
Newcomers will become acquainted with excavation techniques, such as: digging, screening for artifacts, measuring levels, recording site data, bagging and tagging of artifacts and artifact identification. Digging tools are provided.
If you belong to the Friends of Calico digging is free, otherwise there is a $5.00 charge per person for the weekend. Bring hiking boots, hat, scarf, gloves, lots of water and a bagged lunch. If you have them, bring magnifying glass and knee pads.
If you are staying overnight, there are several motels including the Oak Tree Inn in Yermo, Motel 6 or the Super 8 in Barstow (19 miles) or very rough campsites at the dig site (fire pits, tables, outhouse only).
Schedule for Saturday, January 2nd:
8:00 am volunteer sign-in, orientation, and assignment (latecomers welcome)
9:00 am pits open for digging
12 noon lunch break (bring a lunch from home)
1:00 pm digging resumes
3:30 – 4:00 pm Digging stops and complete site forms
5:00 – 6:00 pm Dinner ($5 donation per person)
8:00 – 9:00 pm bonfire (weather permitting)
Sunday, November 8th
7:00 – 8:30 am (Breakfast on your own)
8:30 – 11:30 Digging (if there are enough diggers)
11:30 – 12:00 pm Digging stops and complete site forms, shut down the site and store tools
Noon- head towards home
In case of inclement weather, a notice will be posted on whether or not the event will be canceled.
