    • It’s bizarre they confused “max” for “avg”. And really, by now if you do a study like that, you’d expect – from many years of anecdotes at least – to expect an answer somewhere around 120 years. It wouldn’t mean that 120 or very nearby is the definitive answer, but it’d be a red flag needing much more evidence if it fell far from there.

But again, “max” as “avg”. How is it even possible to do that, since all you need to know to know that the avg isn’t the max is to know or have heard of a single person over that average age. It doesn’t even need study or much data; you turn on any show with Betty White or Bob Newhart on it, think for a moment, and you’re on the corrected path. How did they manage to avoid making those obvious connections?

    • The data on humans that the researchers discarded seems to be pretty close. The oldest documented human was Jeanne Calment, who died at 122 years, 164 days. That’s pretty close to the 120 years that their study estimated was the max natural lifespan.

My son is 9 and lives the Harry Potter series. I think NK Jemisin is a little out of his league till he’s a few years older. Do you have any suggestions of series or authors to suggest to him? Honestly I’m only asking because even at the library they generally recommend the most popular, which isn’t always the best or most inclusive.

      • That’s an excellent question Josh. I’m going to do some research and put together a list of Potterternatives over at Grounded Parents. Look for it soon!

    • C’mon Rebecca, don’t blame this on capitalism. Capitalism is an economic system, not a business plan. If anything, this is more an issue with free markets than capitalism, but even that isn’t accurate. Black markets are not free because they are not subject to the controls afforded by open competition, government and the courts.

    • Geographical displacement isn’t exactly great archaeology. But how much can the piece be sent ‘back to Egypt?’
Which Egypt? Mubarak’s–Nasser’s–Farouk’s– the British protectorate–the Ottoman province–the Arab fiefdom–Alexander the Great’s conquest?
And even those are starting more than 1,000 years after Nefertiti.
Yeah, the Germans were probably guilty of a glorified ‘pot dig’ to stock the museum back home. And we’re damn’ lucky the piece wasn’t lost or wrecked during the War. But we can’t expect every portable piece of history to be re-interred for the sake of ‘return.
No really comfortable solution here. It ain’t right for it to be in Berlin, but its hard to explain just why it feels that way to me.’

      • Trying to tie it to a specific Egyptian politician is spurious. The claim is not that it should belong to a specific Egyptian government regime (though the state would likely be responsible for handling it, in practice). The claim is that it belongs to the wider Egyptian people, to their cultural and geographical heritage. Pharaohs’ tombs are naturally culturally associated with their history, and not with Germany’s. The current German pretense that it’s a natural part of their heritage is clearly silly, a post hoc rationalisation of what was obviously theft. Not theft from an identifiable individual, but from a people at large.

        • But then…do Native American artifacts belong to the European Americans who live on the same territory now? The Egyptian people of today aren’t a sealed-off Shangri-la-ish population. People do move around a lot in 3,000 years.
Its nitpicking, since they’re a damn’ sight closer than the Germans.

          • That might make sense if there were no identifiable Native Americans left. But in the current context, we can distinguish actual Native Americans from whites. And in Egypt, we can distinguish actual Egyptians (regardless of their complicated heritage) from totally external whites. Your position is just stock-standard colonialism.

I think he’s a little bit of an asshole, depending on how he talked to the kid. His contributing child support for a kid he didn’t even want is admirable, though. At the very least I hope he gave like a medical history and was as kind to the kid as possible while still saying he didn’t want him in his life.

Probably the main reason I think he’s a little bit of an asshole is because I could never imagine doing anything like that to a kid. I also have kids, so that’s another reason. The mom is about a trillion times bigger asshole, though, if not more.

    • Awesome points. No one should be forced to be an active parent.( unless you have decided to be the parent). If he never payed child support that probably would have been scummy. I do not see the issue, I understand the child may want him in his life. But, if the father doesn’t want to be in his biological son’s life I think it would be less harmful not to be in his life then having his father resent every minute with him. Have you ever witnessed some who has despised their children? If a person does not want children (I am included in this) they often get treated like they are an abomination .

    • Long time reader, first time commenter. Absolutely agree. Being forced or coerced into parenting is one of my worst nightmares. The guy in the AITA post made it absolutely clear what his boundaries were and he is not at fault for those boundaries being stomped all over.

I’d have made a NTA post but I was banned from the increasingly toxic sub for using the word “incel”, which is apparently a “gendered slur”.

    • This is, more or less, what the largest grocery store chains here in Australia did, with their milk levy. But without the asking.

Essentially, they had been destroying the dairy industry for decades with the “dollar milk”: $1/litre. Not nearly enough to pay dairy farmers – the ones who make it possible for us to even have a glass of milk – a living wage.

Under much sustained pressure, they started charging more: $1.10/litre. With the extra 10c going directly to the farmers (*).

(*) Scandals ensued as it was discovered that not all of that 10c/litre actually did go directly back to the farmers.

So, they get to pat themselves on the back for the great job they are doing to support the country’s farmers, when it is actually the country’s poor (who cannot afford to pay a realistic price for brand name milk) paying for it.
