SkepchickCON Harassment Policy

Home/Events/SkepchickCON Harassment Policy

UPDATE: This policy is no longer valid. The new and improved policy now in effect can be found here: http://events.skepchick.org/2012/06/12/skepchickcon-harassment-policy-new-and-improved/

SkepchickCON is dedicated to providing a safe and harassment-free conference experience for everyone regardless of gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race or religion. We do not tolerate harassment of anyone in attendance in any form. Attendees found to be violating this harassment policy may be sanctioned or expelled from the conference [without a refund] at the discretion of the convention organizers.

Harassment includes offensive verbal comments related to gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, or race.  Harassment also includes deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention. Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.

We acknowledge that SkepchickCON involves socializing and alcohol. Regardless, people are expected to behave with respect for each other and should be respectful of requests by other participants to stop what they’re doing or saying if asked.

If a participant engages in harassing behavior, SkepchickCON organizers may take any action they deem appropriate, including warning the offender or expulsion from the CON [with no refund]. If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact a SkepchickCON or FTB organizer.

SkepchickCON and FTB organizers will be happy to help participants contact hotel/venue security or local law enforcement, provide escorts, or otherwise assist those experiencing harassment to feel safe for the duration of the convention. We value your attendance.

Please note that CONvergence and the Hotel we are in may have their own policies regarding behavior.  Those should be respected and followed as well.

Blatantly based on Skepticamp Ohio‘s who blatantly copied it from Geek Feminism Wiki Conference anti-harassment Policy. Many thanks to both.

Not completely copied as you dropped a religion reference in defining harassment.

In terms of logistics, will the skepchick/FTB contingent be acting as liaisons with Convergence in terms of enforcing this policy? I presume in panel rooms and other public spaces Convergence has ultimate authority in removing participants or confiscating badges. Or is this a mistaken assumption on my part?

Your assumption is correct. We will be working closely with CONvergence to assure a welcoming and comfortable CON experience for all attendees. They have a harassment policy of their own and our experience has been that they respond quickly and appropriately to any reports.

And yes, not completely copied. Based on would be a more appropriate way of describing it. I’ll edit my post.
